A New Concept in the Carriage of Heavy Loads at Sea: TML System

Before starting to introduce that issue, it would be more effective to a little bit describe Heavy Lift Ships utilised for the carriage of heavy loads.

The ships carrying heavy loads are designed for the carriage of loads other types of ships are not able to handle. They are classified in two types. The first type is designed to transport a heavy load from one port to the other. It does not in general house a lifting gear. The other type is a bit more different in terms of technology. It has an ability of partly submerging. Simpler to say; the body does submerge to a level filling ballast tanks, go beneath the load, secure the load and drain the ballast out to load the cargo on deck. In addition, the ship may lift the cargo with crane and put on the deck without using the port facilities as well. You can see the picture of a heavy lift vessel below.

As for the description I will introduce is of different sort of design made by Twin Marine Heavylift in Norway in 2010. As a matter of fact it is a new concept entitled as TML System.

Twin Marine Heavylift Company is planning to achieve an innovation project in order to eliminate all others. That concept enhanced may not really be a new technology but it is obvious to be a new type of combination and by all means this has been approved by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) which is one of the most powerful classification societies. The next is to tell you the construction.

Technical Features

Twin Marine Heavylift Company has made some practice on submerging system for the Heavy Lift Ships. First and foremost let us clarify the technical specifications on Heavy Lift Ships having TML systems developed.

The ships will be 195 min length and 42 meters in breadth as well as having the Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of 31.000 tonnes, Net Registered Tonnage (NRT) of 9.300 tonnes and Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) of 35.000 tonnes. Diesel oil will be of use for diesel engine and generators. For this reason there will be diesel oil tanks with capacity of 2300 m3. At the same time there will be ballast tanks with a total capacity of 70.000 m3. Basically 20 cabins for one personnel, 40 cabins for two persons will take place on board ships. Thus 100 personnel will be able to accommodate on board ship. A field for a chopper will also be available on board as well. A robot submarine will be awaiting for underwater operations.

On board ships there will be six V type and four stroke generators. Two of these generators will have 12 cylinders and each will have a power of 2250 kW. Four of them will have 16 cylinders and each will have a power of 3000 kW. Manoeuvring capability will be improved as the with four propellers of azimuth type able to rotate 360°. Four diesel engines each generating a power of 3250 kW will provide power for the movement of another propeller of azimuth type. Anticipation of service speed for such vessel is 12 knots.

Unique Deck and Wings

There will be railed system on deck on board ships. Therefore the cargo will be moved easily by means of railed system. In addition, deck features improved by engineers will increase the ability of movements. If deemed to be necessary, accommodation could be settled on this railed system so that the number of personnel will increase.

Each deck level will have six cranes at most having a purpose of lifting the cargo. The cranes will be available to move forward and aft on the rails. Each wing of cranes will be 75 meters in length and available to extend till 95 meters via hydraulics. Hence large amount of cargo will be lifted even many cranes can not perform such operation. The wings have distinctively been designed for such operation. For instance a 34.000 metric tonnes of cargo will be lifted via cooperation between two vessels and moved vertically or horizontally with ease to settle the bottom of the sea or onto the platform.

The Advantages of TML System

There are many advantages of TML system. Let us make a list of some featured;

– A lifting capacity of 34.000 tonnes

– Low emission cycle

– High security

– High level of resistance to weather

– Working ability in deep waters

– Rapid operation

– No classification of cargo types

The representatives of Twin Marine Heavylift Company state that the clients will gain 50% income since the system is out of commercial risks and rapid operational facilities.

Operation

Three ships will be operating for the lifting of loads of high tonnage to settle in open sea. One of these three does have the standard technical facilities I have prescribed above. There is no additional equipment on deck. The cargo is on the rails. That ship will be proceeding to the area to lower the cargo. At this particular position two other ships of Twin Marine Heavylift Company will be expecting the one. So the one carrying the cargo will be proceeding and taking place between the other two. These two other ships will be lifting the cargo by means of cranes and wings of special type from the one ship carried the load and they lower to the area assigned with a dedicated angle. If the cargo is to be lowered to sea bottom then the robot submarines will be of use resulting a significant fall of the duration of operation.
