Cisim ile ufuk aras\u0131ndaki a\u00e7\u0131 ve bu a\u00e7\u0131y\u0131 \u00f6l\u00e7t\u00fc\u011f\u00fcm\u00fcz zaman ile g\u00f6zlemci pozisyonunun d\u00fcnya haritas\u0131ndaki koordinatlar\u0131 tespit edebilir. Bundan dolay\u0131 sextant, temelde bir seyir aleti olup, denizciler ve di\u011fer gezginler taraf\u0131ndan da kullan\u0131lmaktad\u0131r.
